Dear Shuli and James,

I summarized my proposal.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In scope:
  • Define main-grid connected Microgrid control mechanism
Is this is the mechanism for the microgrid to coordinate with the utility grid, or for how the microgrid operates internally? Should do both, no? For the internal MG system, the grid looks like just another (somewhat special) resource.
  • Entity in the microgrid are generators and loads (including storage, which is both at different times)
Isn't there a third type of entity that is a 'grid controller' box? There’s the controller and the controlled. Is this distinction useful?
  • Exchange power between microgrid to microgrid and main-grid
Is this to be special to microgrids, or is the mechanism to be the one used by any customer of the utility grid? Only difference between MG and any other grid user is the ability to island, right? Don’t we want an architecture that’s generalizable to all grid users?
  • Do not conflict with main-grid control parameters such as voltage and frequency

Out of scope
  • Inter-entity control within the microgrid (It’s depend on the device manufacture)
This would cover the behavior of loads and of generators? I think you mean “intra-entity” correct?

Hardware architecture
  • Introducing microgrid configuration inverter between main-grid and microgrid
  • Utilize smart meter for power measurement
  • Set edge device to communicate with inverter smart meter and Hyphae or DSO
Other than a transfer switch to electrically separate the microgrid from the grid, are there any differences between Hyphae and a non-microgrid customer?

Thanks,
--Bruce

Microgrid configuration inverter functions
  • Follow voltage and frequency with main-grid and supply/receive power by battery from/to the microgrid
  • Set constant current for main-grid when connected

Hyphae communication
  • Readout inverter condition and battery SoC
  • Readout smart meter information
  • Set current and phase to inverter

Hi Tadashi and James, I was reading through my mail. I think where you are going is great and could benefit from formal agreement.

What do you think about the two of you leading us in the next steps building on Kotaro and my slides? Last session I think we were trying to define scope. Now we can move onto functions. You both captured this nicely.

Please let us all know.
Thanks,

Shuli

Hi! James,

I completely agree the definition you provided for the microgrid.
Big issue on microgrid is a transition of main-grid connection and disconnection.
Using breaker or back-to-back converter for separation form main-grid will generate imbalance transition.
I added additional entity on your document.

Let get started the discussion of microgrid architecture.

For tomorrow (Thursday; at least in California) I will be late to the meeting and then just on the phone for a while.

Thanks

Hi Morita-san,

IEEE 2030.6 provides a state machine for connection/disconnection but no API. I have the spec, perhaps we can discuss it at the next meeting, or at the Hyphae TC meeting tomorrow.
