Proposal: Implement Wireshark EXI decoder plugin

Dear EVeresters

I just wanted to drop an idea in the room. As far as I understood, the implementation of a non-Java EXI decoder is on the roadmap.

Once this is available, it would be very valuable, to use it as a basis to implement a Wireshark decoding plugin for EXI messages.
This would be a great tool to debug real charging sessions.

that's a lot! I think it makes sense to reinstall everything in a Raspberry as that's where I connected the QCA7000. It would be great if you could provide a ready-to-go image for the Raspberry for quick testing in the future - if I don't mess it up too much I can upload mine on GH when I'm done.

You can also have a look at the YetiDriver, which is a driver for the Pionix BelayBox hardware. Essentially this module abstracts the control pilot wire for EVerest, also check attached document on how the interfacing between EvseManager and your HAL module works.
Often this step requires some modifications in the microcontroller that produces the PWM signal, as EVerest needs relatively low level access but the lowest state machine should remain in the uC for safety reasons. Let me know how that fits with your protocol.

Once you have the board_support_AC module up and running you should be able to do basic PWM charging with everest.
The graphical admin interface is somewhat beta, but in principle you just need to clone https://github.com/EVerest/everest-admin-panel and build that and run a webserver to deliver the web interface. If it runs on the same host as EVerest it will automatically connect to EVerest.
You don't need it however, you can edit the config.json by hand and it is a good exercise to do so to understand the modular concepts.

3) ISO15118-2 AC:

To get ISO running, load the JsRiseV2G as well as the EvseSlac module in config.json and connect them to EvseManager. We can help you with the configuration once you reach this step. Point the configuration of both modules to the correct linux ethernet device of your PLC and enable HLC in EvseManager configuration. Then ISO AC should be up and running.
We will merge the PyJosev branch shortly, then RiseV2G becomes deprecated. But that will only be a one line change in your config.json to load the PyJosev module instead.

4) OCPP:

Simply load the ocpp module in config.json and connect to EvseManager. Edit the ocpp configuration to the correct backend URL and it should be up and running.

Yes, I have a test platform to run GPIO currently but no hardware
connection to EV, it is not difficult to add the state machine, if I
can find an EV EMS simulation I'll test it before the hardware
modification is done.

you can build an EV simulator quite easily yourself with a few resistors and one diode

Very good, I need about 3 months to modify my test platform to connect
my solar panels to run 400VDC with varied current between 0.5A to 2A
depending on the weather, I think it should be able to charge EV DC
slowly to test the low level PWM and DC state machine, right?

DC charging is relatively complex and will need to follow the ISO15118/DIN SPEC 70121 protocols. EVerest will implement the software part, but you will need quite some hardware.
E.g. you will need a DCDC converter that can set the voltage that the car requests and so on. What does your current HW setup looks like?

Hi Cornelius,

What I meant is that there are typically two CPUs in most architectures:
One running Linux (and EVerest), e.g. the iMX6 in your case plus one
dedicated Microcontroller (e.g. STM32 Cortex M0 or M4) that is running a
bare metal firmware.
This microcontoller handles the lowest level state machine to ensure safety
and timing specs of IEC61851 are met independently of Linux.
E.g. you do want to react to a state C->B transition by switching off
relais even if Linux crashed.
You are right, there needs to be some hardware protection for Linux
crash, that should not be that hard, even with bare metal firmware, it
can be crashed by both firmware and hardware as well.

It is of course possible to use PWM output directly from the Linux CPU
GPIOs, in that case the lowest state machine will need to run in an EVerest
module (which would be easy to implement). We have not done this yet as we
have not ported to hardwares yet where this is the case, but it may come in
the future and help is always welcome if you have such a platform now! For
now we mostly work on Pionix dev kit AC charger hardware, which uses the
YetiDriver module.
Yes, I have a test platform to run GPIO currently but no hardware
connection to EV, it is not difficult to add the state machine, if I
can find an EV EMS simulation I'll test it before the hardware
modification is done.

Regarding your last comment below, yes, if the state machine runs on the
linux a nice interface should be defined and the ABCDEF state machine could
be shared between all hardware drivers that do not contain its own state
machine.

We are working on a full implementation that should be working in the next 2-3 months.
Very good, I need about 3 months to modify my test platform to connect
my solar panels to run 400VDC with varied current between 0.5A to 2A
depending on the weather, I think it should be able to charge EV DC
slowly to test the low level PWM and DC state machine, right?

Right, indeed I am running Linux on an iMX6 MCU which can handle PWM.

charging, right? Which parts need for full DC charging? How difficult
is it to make the full implementation for DC charging?

yes, this is a stop that ensures DC does not switch on power as it is not completely implemented. We are working on a full implementation that should be working in the next 2-3 months, but there are a lot of things missing in basically all modules still. At the moment if you enable DC, it will start a DC ISO15118-2 session with the car (no DIN SPEC 70121 support as of now!) and do all init steps of ISO HLC until the PreCharge step. There we do not adjust the DC voltage and the charging sessions ends with an error.

Did you refer to high level comms to authentication, security, payment
etc, right?

referinf to high level comms with the car over powerline ethernet over control pilot pin (aka ISO15118-2 and DIN SPEC 70121). This may provide auth via Plug and Charge but it is also a complete charging protocol apart from that. For DC charging HLC is mandatory as it does not support basic (aka PWM) charging. For AC HLC is rarely supported at the moment but will come to support PnC and bidirectional charging hopefully in the future.

I think if there is another interface to separate the state machine
and hardware, the state machine can move to another module to be
shared by all chargers, but correct me if I am wrong
